Things & Facts about Lord Shiva?

No one knows about the birth of Lord Shiva, it is believed that Lord Shiva was already present in this universe.
  • There are three reasons for Lord Shiva to be Neelkanth -
  • When the sea was churned, poison came out of it, which had to be consumed by Lord Shiva, due to which his throat became blue.
  • Indra once struck Shiva with his Vajra in an attempt to snatch his prosperity. The weapon made Shiva's throat blue.
  • Once in a fight between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, Lord Vishnu grabbed the neck of Lord Shiva, due to which Lord Shiva's throat was blue.
  • Arjuna had to do hard penance to get the Pashupati weapon of Lord Shiva. He used this weapon with the aid of Vishnu and other God's to destroy the triple cities of Tripura and burn them to ashes. It is considered the most powerful weapon in the universe.
  • Lord Shiva defeated the demon Andhaka with his trisula. The trident considered more powerful than even the Pashupata weapon. Lord Shiva gave his trident to Lavanasura to kill the king's minister. Shiva also gave his most powerful weapon trishul name vijaya to vishwamitra.

  • Lord Shiva also presented Pashupati weapon to King Vishwamitra.
  • Parshu Ram was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, taught martial arts to Lord Parashurama and, after his might, gave him a divine axe. He used the Parasu to slay Kartavirya Arjuna.

  • There are also some avatars of Lord Shiva who are known as Rudra. Rudra avatars number 11 of Lord Shiva include Vasus, Marutas, Aditya's along with Indra.
  • During Vishnu's incarnation as Mohini, Shiva was mesmerized by her beauty. During his course of attraction, one of Shiva's seeds sprouted out. Lord Shiva collected it in one leaf and gave it to Vayudev and Vayudev got it entered into Anjana's womb. As a result, Anjana gave birth to a child known as Hanuman with the powers of Lord Shiva and Vayudev.

  • Lord Shiva created Virabhadra with a tuft of his hair which defeated King Daksha. After this, God resurrected his human head by replacing it with a goat's head.

  • As per Krishna's words, in every incarnation he offered severe penance to gratify Lord Shiva. It is also said that Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are both timeless and both are the same.. Krishna praised Lord Shiva several times in those incarnations.
  • Lord Shiva gave Sudarshan Chakra as a gift to Lord Vishnu. The divine discus of Vishnu was later passed on to God's who in turn used it in battles with demons. But Sudarshan Chakra failed to kill Ravana.

  • Lord Shiva protected the life of sage Markandeya from Lord Yama and also attacked Yama. Markendeya was a great devote of Shiva. He also invested his energy for the birth of sage Durvasa.
  • Shiva accompanied Indra, Brahma and other God's to Lanka after Ravana's death. He congratulated Rama for killing the evil and mighty Ravana.
  • Once Kamdev tried to dissolve the penance of Lord Shiva. After Shiva's penance was interrupted by Kamadeva upon several attempts, He was burned to ashes from the third eye of Shiva.
  • Lord Shiva fought with Lord Krishna to save the life of Rakshasa Banasura. The battle was fierce and when Shiva was unsuccessful in vanquishing Krishna, he requested him to spare Banasura's life.
  • Lord Shiva defeated the supporters of Lord Rama in battle to protect one of his Bhagat King Veeramuni during the Ashwamedha Yag of Lord Rama. He then confronted Hanuman and fought a terrible battle, unable to defeat his own form, Shiva granted Hanuman a boon. The battle ended after Rama's arrival.
  • Lord Shiva granted many blessings to his devotees, he granted the gift of birth of a child to Lord Krishna. Lord Shiva gave Meghnad Indrajit a rare boon. He gave Jayadratha a boon that he would be able to defeat four pandavas for a day.
  • Shiva resides in Mount Kailasa that is said to be inaccessible to mortals. Lord Shiva lives with his family on Mount Kailash and sees all the events and activities of the world from there.

Lord Shiva is one of the most important and respectable dieties in the mahabharata, Ramayana as well as Puranas. It is said that Lord Shiva's form is white like snow and Lord Shiva is called the Supreme God of the Universe.
