Pepsi Co's pancake brand , Aunt Jemima will no longer using the picture and name of ' Aunt Jemima'.
The brand is 130 years old and contained a black woman named Auntie Jemima dressed in a minstrel character.
Aunt Jemima's picture changed over time, but Quaker recently removed Aunt Jemima and her photo to reduce racist criticisms. Quaker, a subsidiary of Pepsi Co, said removing the image and name is part of an effort by the company "to make progress toward racial equality."
Kristin Kroffle, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Quaker Foods North America, said in a news that Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype. ''As we have been striving for racial equality through many initiatives before and we are looking at the portfolio of our brands and should ensure that they reflect our values and meet the expectations of our consumers''.
Kroepfl said that the company has worked to "update" the brand to be "appropriate and respectful" but that it realized the changes were insufficient.
Aunt Jemima has come under renewed criticism recently amid protests across the nation and around the world sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
